The Mid-1900s
1945 to be exact. This is when a German soldier, Dr. Klaus Maertens, broke his foot and decided to redesign his boots, which, at the time, were hard and painful to wear. He added air comfort to the soles with discarded material.
Dr. Maertens presented this idea to his friend, Herbert Funk, and the two went to work reproducing these new and more comfortable shoes. This boot surprisingly sold, primarily to older women, and the boot became a hit for over a decade.
Then it Happened (The 1960s)
The Griggs family decided they would enhance the German air comfort soles and make them their own. And on April 1, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot was born. This offered the same idea of comfortable soles but added a few changes to enhance the boot’s appeal.
This included adding a modified heel, a yellow welt stitch, a two-tone sole edge, and a unique style sole pattern. These new boots are known as the “Airwair”, and they took off in popularity almost immediately.
