1. Levi’s

1.1 The Brand

Established in 1853 in San Francisco, California, by Levi Strauss, Levi’s is one of the most renowned brands of denim goods worldwide.

With a rich history of more than a century, Levi’s is a part of the Levi Strauss & Co. company, which was founded by the Strauss brothers, all of whom were Bavarian immigrants.

Although Levi’s had already quite a reputation for quality denim clothing, it wasn’t until the collaboration with Jacob Davis happened, a collaboration that would greatly improve the durability of the brand’s pants.

Originally, pants made by Levi’s were work attire, used primarily by miners and other workers, who required comfortable but durable clothing to wear to work.

That is exactly what they found in Levi’s, the pants of which were reinforced with rivets thanks to Davis, an added feature that made the pants more capable of withstanding wear and capable of lasting much longer.

With that being said, the popularity of the brand goes hand in hand with the popularity of jeans, which went from working pants to a fashion piece that have remained popular and beloved to this day.

The peak of this rise in popularity was in the early and mid 1900s, when hippies greasers and rockers not only chose jeans as their favorite type of pants, but also played around with the styles at the time, even inspiring a number of designs still worn today.

With highly durable and comfortable designs, as well as a wide range of styles, Levi’s went on to become one of the leading brands of jeans and other denim clothing, along with several other ones, one of which being Diesel, which we will discuss shortly.

1.2 Fabrics and More

Jeans are traditionally made of denim fabric, which is a cotton-based fabric that we have previously discussed in this piece. Over the years, however, there have been various fabrics used depending on what the jeans are intended to provide.

But, of course, the brands we have picked today do not solely offer jeans, but a variety of other products as well.
With that being said, Levi’s use primarily denim of several weights and thicknesses and variations of it, such as crosshatch or selvedge.

Cotton is also part of their clothing, along with corduroy, as well as chambray, a denim-like fabric that is much more breathable and lighter than actual denim.

Fleece, Sherpa, linen, madras, jersey, sateen are used in other garments made by the brand and blends with elastane, spandex and other fibers are also available, which help to enhance the qualities and performance of different fabrics.

2.1 The Brand

Diesel is a European brand, namely Italian, and it was established in the town of Molvena 41 years ago, in 1978.

The brand’s history started with Renzo Rosso‘s passion for making jeans, who would then go on to establish Diesel after years of school and experience. Diesel is a brand that was founded after Rosso bought 40% of the shares of Moltex, the manufacturing company he used to work for.

Over the years, Diesel launched a series of lines and flagship stores in many parts of the world, with a primary focus in Japan and the US.

While the brand is mostly renowned for its jeans, it also manufactures a number of other clothes, as well as footwear and accessories.

It markets its clothing line under two brands, the Diesel and Diesel Black Gold, including a separate line for children, thus catering to all ages and genders.

2.2 Fabrics And More

In regards to the fabrics used by Diesel, of course, they primarily rely on denim for their jeans and denim clothing.

Cotton is another fabric that the brand uses quite a bit in their tops, mainly.

Other types of fabrics and materials include viscose rayon, also used for tops, giving them a more flowy and lighter feel.

Nylon and blends of cashmere, lyocell and wool are several other fabrics used in the brand’s autumn and winter garments that are made to insulate while being lightweight and comfortable.

Aside from these, spandex, elastane and other fibers are also included in the clothing made by Diesel, as a way to add elasticity, durability and comfort to them.

The waist is mid-height, and the closure is a combination of zip fly and button.

There is the classic five-pocket design and what sets this jean apart is, firstly, its wash and star-patterned print that gives it a very stylish look, as well as two ankle zippers, which further add to their look.

3. Which Brand is Better?

Frankly, there is never a definite answer to this question, because it all depends on what you are looking for in a brand.

Do you value style over comfort, are you more a fan of classic looks or prefer a more avant-garde and bold style?

All of this, along with how certain clothing from a brand fit are major factors that determine which brand is the right one for you.

In the case of Levi’s and Diesel, we have two brands that make very similar types of products, but that is practically the only similarity between the two.

Levi’s is a classic brand that has stayed true to their original designs, placing more of an importance to durability and comfort, while ensuring that their products wear well on most bodies.

This is a tried and tested brand when it comes to quality, so if you are more in favor of traditional, classic styles of jeans and denim clothing, then this is the brand to go for.

On the other hand, Diesel caters to a more “younger” audience, for lack of a better word.

If you look at the brand’s products, be them pants, tops or accessories, what you will notice right away is the very eye-catching and unique styles that they come in.

Thus, if you prefer a brand that is more daring in its products, that experiments with different styles and provides a wider range of ‘out there’ designs, then we would recommend Diesel.

That is all for this piece. We will see you in the next one!

  1. I like the comparisons you do with the denim brands. I’m a doe hard Levi’s 501 person, but it’s good to get the scoop on other brands without having to actually buy a pair of them. I know this site caters more to women, but as a man, I want to make sure I’m going with the better brand of jeans.
